What I don’t understand about adult US Citizens who don’t vote. I understand Democrats and Republicans both have problems. Neither of them are perfect regardless of who is leading the country. Often the President of the United States (POTUS) is so admired by the people who elected him and her in the future that they become blinded to their faults. They become deranged as if their chosen POTUS can do no wrong.
It looks like I stepped back and gave you some good reasons not to vote. But if you consider what happens when people don’t vote the consequences are worse. If you look at POTUS as only evil you are not taking into account the benefits very many of your fellow Americans see in him or her. When you vote the truth is the person you vote for may or may not get elected. Wouldn’t you want to elect the lesser of two evils it makes sense that you decide which one will do less harm and vote for that person.
When you do vote the odds of helping to elect your preferred candidate is usually a 50 to 50 chance. This is because for almost the entire history of United States elections for POTUS there have only been two front runner candidates who make it to the end of the election and one wins. This in itself may seem corrupt when there are independent candidates, Libertarian’s, Green party candidates and so on.
But if you look at the history of who wins the election for POTUS every four years 99% of the time it’s either a Democratic candidate or a Republican candidate. If you’re fed up with only having those two options to choose from you are not alone. You can choose the candidate for a different party and vote for them.
You can at least get your hopes up that an independent candidate will be elected POTUS. If you are an adult US Citizen you’re doing yourself a disfavor when you don’t vote. As a US Citizen you are an American. You are a Citizen of United States with all the good and bad included in the country. As a Citizen of United States the way you live your life makes a difference and has an effect in your community and the people you care for most. The alternative to not electing a leader of a Town or City or of the United States is called anarchy.
Look it up, Anarchy means a society without a government, rulers, or leaders. The word comes from an old Greek word that means “without a ruler”. People use it to describe both a peaceful system of self-control or total social disorder.
The everyday meaning of anarchy is:
Chaos: A state of confusion, noise, or total lawlessness where no rules are followed.
Disorder: A breakdown of normal public order after a government falls apart.
You might think that anarchy is a peaceful system of self control but there would be no rule of law. When there are no consequences for peoples actions that is not a system. A system can be defined as a group of connected parts that work together to form a whole.
When everyone in a civilization, take United States for example is connected to beliefs, plans and in actions people work together.
It’s not that simple people have wide and varying beliefs, peoples plans vary, peoples actions vary. Through aligning beliefs people form relationships. Through making the same plans people go to work and are productive, earn money and can buy things. Through finding people who like to do the same activities as you, you create friends and community.
You are lucky to be a US Citizen. Watch a news report about a foreign country and you’ll see that foreign countries that are not US Allies often have many problems.
United States has many problems and solutions. Ask yourself, Are you part of the solution for the greater good or you part of the problem to the greater good? It’s an honest question. People who are part of the problem might be breaking laws. Even worse they might be terrorizing other people.
In United States there is no law requiring that US Citizens vote. It’s your choice. If you don’t vote does not mean you’ve broken a law or that you are going to break a law.
If you’re an adult and US Citizen the opportunity to vote is precious. If you’re a US Citizen and an adult and have never voted you can vote in the next election. If you’re an adult and US Citizen and have not voted ever during all the years you are an adult you can vote in the next election.
Your vote counts and your vote will help decide the winner in the next election. Hopefully you agree that life is precious. When a person loses interest in life they might be a danger to themselves or a danger to other people.
Healthy nutritious food is precious. Clean clear water to drink and bathe in is precious. If you don’t vote it doesn’t mean you’re bad. It doesn’t mean you’re wrong. Maybe it means no one you trust explained it in a way to you that made sense before.
If you’re a US Citizen and going to be old enough to vote for the first time at the next election and if you are already old enough to vote in the next election, I hope you will.
